Why Fostering a Dog Is the Best Gift

The holidays are the perfect time to spread joy and love, but for dogs in shelters, the season can feel a bit lonelier. One meaningful way you can give back this holiday season is by fostering a dog.

Fostering a pup during the holidays can give pets a safe and quiet space away from the stress of crowded shelters. If youā€™re staying home and have a little extra room in your heart and home, this could be the perfect time to step in.

Fostering doesnā€™t just help the shelterā€”it helps you too! Youā€™ll get to experience the joy of pet parenting, even if itā€™s just for a few weeks. Plus, itā€™s a chance to make a dogā€™s adoption story even more special. When dogs are in foster care, they have a better chance of being adopted. Plus, they get the one-on-one care and attention they need to show off their best selves.

Fostering creates lifelong memories. Instead of more holiday stress, youā€™ll be helping a dog find their forever family.

So, why not make this holiday season one of second chances? Fostering a dog can be the gift that gives backā€”for both you and the dog. If you are interested, look into programs run by your local shelters and see if you can make a difference!

Winter Walkies: Protect Your Dogā€™s Paws from the Cold

We love winter walks with our dogs but the cold, ice, and salt can be harmful to their paws. Here are some of our favorite tips to keep those feet safe during chilly weather:

Booties: Love them or loathe them, dog boots are a top way to protect your pupā€™s paws. They help shield against cold, snow, and salt while providing warmth and coverage. Plus, they keep their paw pads nice and dry! Just make sure you measure your dogā€™s paws (heel to toenail) to get the perfect fit.

Paw Balm: Before heading out into the snow, slather on some paw balm. This protects your dogā€™s paws from the drying effects of salt and ice. After the walk, reapply to keep their paws soft and smooth.

Towel Off: After your dogā€™s winter adventures, keep a towel nearby to wipe down their paws. This removes any salt, ice, or debris theyā€™ve picked up on their walk. For extra protection, dunk their paws in a bucket of warm water to rinse off any harmful residue.

Shorter Walks: In extreme cold, itā€™s best to keep walks brief. If itā€™s too cold for you, itā€™s probably too cold for your dog, too! And donā€™t forget to bundle them up in a cozy jacket if needed.

Stitcherā€™s Tips For Keeping Your Pup Chill

The holiday season is full of joy, but it can also be stressfulā€”for both you and your dog. With all the chaos, guests, and changes in routine, itā€™s completely normal that your pup would be more stressed out than usual. Luckily there are some ways you can pamper your pup and help them de-stress during this busy season:

Massage: A gentle massage can do wonders for your dogā€™s anxiety. Whether itā€™s a simple belly rub or a more detailed TTouch technique, the calming touch will help your dog relax and enjoy a break from all the holiday hustle.

Exercise: Letā€™s face it: a tired dog is a happy dog. A long walk, playtime in the yard, or even some indoor games can help burn off that extra energy and make your pup feel more at ease.

Soothing Music: Swap out the holiday jingles for some calming tunes. Fun fact: dogs love reggae music as the consistent calm beat is relaxing for them. Why not stick on some reggae the next time your pup is feeling a little anxious?

Play: Your dog may feel left out with all the holiday prep. Spending some one-on-one time playing helps distract them from the hustle and gives you both a nice break.

Stay Calm: Dogs feed off our energy. Making sure you stay calm will help your dog stay relaxed too.
