Bo the Bloodhound Wins 2024 Hero Dog Awards

A courageous 18-month-old bloodhound named Bo has been crowned the 2024 Hero Dog by American Humane.

Bo works as a K-9 officer alongside his human partner, Sgt. David Rowland, and has quickly earned quite the reputation. In his young career, heā€™s already saved lives with his powerful nose and scent-tracking skillsā€”and this is just the beginning for him.

Boā€™s journey with the Gastonia Police Department in North Carolina started last year, and heā€™s been nothing short of amazing. Heā€™s proved his worth by reuniting missing children and seniors with their loved onesā€”and even gives them comforting nuzzles and sloppy kisses.

Among his impressive achievements, Bo helped locate an elderly dementia patient and an 11-year-old autistic child and even tracked down robbery suspects. His most heroic moment came in May 2024 when he found a young child taken at knifepoint. Thanks to Bo, that 7-year-old is now safe at home with their family, with a full life ahead.

Bo was one of hundreds of extraordinary dogs nominated by the public and then selected by a panel of judges to represent Americaā€™s best in the Hero Dog Awards. Competing across categories like Therapy Dogs, Service and Guide Dogs, and Military Dogs, Boā€™s courage, compassion, and dedication made him stand out.

At the awards gala on January 8, heā€™ll be celebrated alongside other inspiring dogs, including Dayo, a therapy dog who comforts patients in palliative care, and Niki, a U.S. Coast Guard K-9 with a track record of over 4,000 hours of service. Together, these incredible pups remind us of the impact they bring to us and the rest of the world.

Thanksgiving Foods Your Pup Can and Canā€™t Share

Thanksgiving is a day for giving thanksā€”and all of the delicious food! Itā€™s a holiday filled with all the cozy, once-a-year favorites like turkey, pumpkin pie, stuffing, and mashed potatoes. And naturally, our pups will want to join in the festivities and have a taste. Hereā€™s a quick guide to keep your dog happy and healthy on Thanksgiving.

Dog-Safe Thanksgiving Foods

  • Turkey: Plain, unseasoned turkey is the real treat your pup will be sniffing for all day. Offer a few small, bite-sized portions, but avoid the skin, fat, or seasoning ā€“ these extras can turn your dogā€™s happy Thanksgiving into a tummy ache (or worse).

  • Sweet Potatoes: These orange potatoes are packed with fiber and vitamins, making them a tasty and nutritious treat for your pup! Just be sure to skip the marshmallow-topped casserole (that gooey goodness is all yours!).

  • Cranberries: Fresh or dried cranberries (in moderation) are safe, but avoid cranberry sauce due to its added sugars.

  • Green Beans: Raw, steamed, or canned (without added salt) green beans are a healthy treat.

  • Pumpkin: Plain pumpkin (not pie filling) is a true doggy superfood. Itā€™s great for their digestion and the closest thing to dessert they can safely enjoy!

  • Apples: Peeled apple slices make a safe snack, but avoid seeds, core, and desserts like apple pie.

  • Corn: Small amounts of corn off the cob are okay, but avoid corn casseroles and the cob to prevent choking hazards.

Thanksgiving Foods to Avoid

  • Turkey Skin and Bones: This one might surprise dog parents! While it seems natural for them to enjoy all parts of the turkey (what would they do in the wild?), the high-fat skin and brittle bones can be choking hazards and lead to serious digestive issues for your pup.

  • Stuffing and Mashed Potatoes: Garlic, onions, butter, and herbs common in these dishes are harmful to dogs. More for us!

  • Sage, Garlic, and Onion: These seasonings, especially in large quantities, can be toxic and lead to health issues.

  • Nutmeg and Alcohol: Both are highly toxic and can cause seizures and other life-threatening reactions.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving feast with these tips in mind, and both you and your pup will have a safe, happy day! Whatā€™s your pupā€™s favorite Thanksgiving treat? Let us know!
