How to Spot Health Changes in Your Dog
Dogs canāt tell us when something feels off, but they often show us in small ways. Maybe your pup skips breakfast, naps more than usual, or has breath that suddenly smells different. Those subtle changes are worth paying attention to.
Veterinarians say keeping a close eye on energy, appetite, weight, and even odors from ears or skin can help catch issues before they become serious. You can also add in simple routines like brushing teeth, trimming nails, and cleaning ears to help prevent health problems down the road.
Prevention goes beyond the surface, too. Monthly heartworm, flea, and tick protection is essential year-round, even when itās cold outside. And a balanced diet paired with daily exercise helps protect against obesity, one of the most common health challenges for pets.
Technology can lend a hand here as well. Smart dog collars now track activity, rest, and sometimes even heart and respiratory rates. This gives you a clearer picture of your dogās overall well-being between vet visits!
When you combine these small daily habits with regular checkups, youāre keeping your dog healthy and giving them more happy years by your side.

Dog of the Day, Pickles
Say hello to Pickles, a spirited pup with a rescue story that led him straight into Lauraās heart. Born in Arkansas and saved by Hearts of Hope in Michigan, Pickles had a few early bumps in the road before finding his perfect fit. The moment he arrived, he raced across the field with a full-speed grin that said, Iām home.
Pickles now takes his job as head of yard security very seriously, chasing off squirrels, rabbits, deer, and even foxes on his daily patrols. When heās not ruling the great outdoors, heās enjoying dinner (salmon, turkey, and peanut butter are house favorites) or playing at daycare with his buddies Lloyd, Hank, Ruby, and Ralphie.
Thanks to Laura for sharing Picklesā journey! Want your pup to be featured in the Daily Dig? Send us a photo, their name, and a few fun facts. Weād love to tell their story!

Dogs have a remarkable ability to find their way home, and science is starting to explain how. Researchers believe their sense of smell, visual memory, and even sensitivity to the Earthās magnetic field all play a role.
A 2020 study followed 27 dogs in hundreds of off-leash trials. Many relied on ācompass runsā, where they aligned themselves with the north-south axis before choosing a route. Dogs that did this reached their owners more quickly than those who used scent alone. It suggests that magnetic fields may give them a universal reference point.
Of course, smell remains their superpower. With up to 100 million scent receptors, dogs can detect odors across vast distances. Familiar smells may guide them back through unfamiliar territory.
There are countless stories of this in real life. One Labrador named Bucky trekked more than 500 miles to return to his family, while a Jack Russell named Jarvis managed to outpace his owner on a ferry ride home.
Still, not every lost dog can navigate back. Microchips, ID tags, and smart collars remain essential tools to keep dogs safe and give families peace of mind!
